In this picture, I was standing about 1400 feet from the trees on the hill top as the moon rose into view.

In this picture, I was standing about 1400 feet from the trees on the hill top as the moon rose into view. The sun had already set behind leaving barely enough light to see the trees that were obscuring the moon.

Lunar Supermoon Eclipse on Sept 27, 2015

Here in Western Washington, the Eclipse of the supermoon was in full swing as the moon was rising above the trees. The moon was dark enough that I was able to take a picture that shows the stars in the dark blue night sky sunset along with the outline of the trees.

As the moon in a full lunar eclipse rose higher the trees in the foreground became shadows in the night sky where the stars sparkled alongside the moon. Stars are not normally seen in the presence of the moon due to the brightness of the moon overpowering the stars. The lunar eclipse gives us a unique view of the night sky!

Lunar Supermoon Eclipse on Sept 27, 2015

The beauty of photography is the ability to capture a moment in time. The eclipse of the supermoon is a once in a generation occurance. This photo captures a rare view of the moon as it is coming out of the total eclipse. It was a surprise to me to see the blue band in the picture. I did not remember seeing it with my eyes when I was taking the pictures. However, during post processing where I can lower the brightness of the brightly lit portion of the moon and increase the brightness of the shaded portion of the moon, I discovered a very clear blue band at the border between the bright white and dim red of the partially eclipsed moon. This blue band is caused by the sun light traveling through the Earth's ozone layer.
